Introduction:
America was originally introduced to Techno music in the 1980s. This version of techno music was created in the city of Detroit and was based on mixing electric technology with some elements of funk . The first known creator of the genre was Juan Atkins, who experimented with a synthesizer and tape deck to make the Detroit techno that is heard today. Though techno has evolved in many ways and has taken influence from other genres, many people associate it with the party or rave scene today. Big music festivals, such as Tomorrowland and Exodus, were popularized by bringing in some of the biggest artists in techno to perform. From videos posted online, it seemed that a lot of people from different places came together under the genre to just have fun and release stress. Techno is a genre that has a interesting way of pulling people together and I wanted why.
To do this, I started to listen to a little techno throughout my week and watched some videos on YouTube of people within this techno. The creators of these videos often talked about how Techno, as a genre and community, was very inviting and thrilling. Some said that Techno’s ability to be versatile was the main reason so many people enjoyed it. While the views on Techno may vary between its listeners, they all have this common idea that Techno is a community based genre.
My Perspective
Growing up, I barely listened to techno music and often thought of it as a music genre that I couldn’t get into. The music often was very loud and the lack of lyrics didn’t really help keep my focus. I remember having some friends who would listen to it, but it wasn’t that big where I lived. Through this week of listening to Techno music, I was able to see more of its unique sound and the community surrounding it. I realized that Techno is a pretty addictive genre and can sometimes be good in relaxing your mind. I did some basic chores while listening to music from the artists, Fisher and Charlotte de Witte, and found it to be very good background music. I think the most appeal of Techno is that you don’t have to really think to hard to enjoy it and it can be a way of releasing a lot of stress on the brain.
I was happy that I took the time this week to listen and learn more about Techno. Even though I don’t see myself as a regular listener of the genre, I will consider adding some songs to my playlist incase I ever just want to release some stress. Techno is a great music genre and the community surrounding it are just as amazing.
