Abstract

Beyonce’ is arguably one of the best entertainers of our time. Through years of hard-work and dedication of being the best, which is why I decided to conduct research on the famed living legend. Beyonce’ has been in the limelight for nearly two decades and has managed to only get better with time. She has many people she attributes towards her success and the way she maintains her personal life private. On this page you will learn more about Beyonce’ and the impact she has made in the music industry as well as the lives of her devoted fans.

Where it All Started

Beyonce’ Giselle Knowles-Carter was born September 4, 1981 to parents Matthew Knowles, a sales manager turned music manager, and Celestine “Tina” Knowles, a fashion designer and businesswoman  in Houston, Texas. Beyonce’ has one younger sibling, Solange Knowles, who is also a singer, songwriter, and entertainer. Growing up in Texas, Beyonce’ grew up in a very loving environment. There in her childhood she met her lifelong friend Kelly Rowland, who she will share the stage and fam with in the near future. Beyonce attended St. Mary’s Elementary school whom she owes her rhythmic attributes to. As a child, Beyonce’ barely talked to her peers and found that as a way to express herself.  That presence of being on stage later into a musical desire. Also, since a young age Beyonce’ loved to sing in public. As her parents started to notice her desire of being on stage, her mother used to allow her to sing her in hair salon for customers. Beyonce’ won her first singing contest at age seven, even  beating the older kids at her Elementary school. During her academic career, Beyonce’ attended such as: Parker Elementary school (1990), High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Alief Elsik High school (“Beyonce’ Knowles”). At tender age of eight years old, Beyonce’ and her best friend Kelly met LaTavia Roberson while at an audition for an all-girl entertainment group. That group was later known as Girl Tyme. Since a young age Beyonce’ has been seen dominating to musical enterprise as a groundbreaking influential artist. She has been known to being one of the greatest entertainers of all time through her versatility as an artist and by dominating almost every musical genre.

What's Next?

Girl’s Tyme was the first girl group Beyonce’ was associated with. The original members of the group included her childhood friend, Kelly Rowland, and Latavia Roberson along with three other unnamed girl members. The groups talents consisted of them rapping, dancing and singing and would perform on talent show circuit in Houston. After being discovered by R&B producer Arne Frager, they were put on the largest talent show on national TV called Star Search (Cahoon, Brad). Although they failed to win the contest, they were eventually signed to Elektra Records and then Atlantic Records, only to be cut by the company. In 1996 the group began working on their debut album under Sony Music and then later the group signed to Columbia Records.

In 1996 the group changed their name to Destiny’s Child based off the book of Isaiah. After the name change from Girls Tyme, the members also changed. At this stage in their career, the original members of Destiny’s Child comprised of: Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Latavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. However their final and most successful line-up included the original two, Knowles and Rowland, and now Michelle Williams. The lead singer of the group was Beyonce’ due to her soothing alto singing voice and capability to sing in any range. Although Rowland and Williams did take turns as lead on the majority of the songs, Beyonce’ made the group what it was. Destiny’s Child area of genre was solely R&B and had many hit singles such as “Say My Name”, “Bills Bills Bills” and their most awarded “Survivor”. Destiny’s Child often cites R&B singer, Janet Jackson, as one of their main influences. During the course of their time together 1996-2006, they left a fairly sizable legacy behind” as “one of the best-selling female pop vocal groups in history.”As a group they won a grammy and have sold more than sixty million records worldwide and have influenced other pop girl groups and artists after them such as: Tinashe, Ariana Grande, Danity Kane and Pussycat Dolls.

Major Influences

Beyonce’ has been singing since a very young age. Growing up, she listened to artists like: Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Tina Turner and many Gospel artists that helped formed her into the musical icon she is today. However, her major influencer of all time was Michael Jackson, this is no surprise. Michael Jackson in his time and currently, the greatest entertainer of all time, why wouldn’t Beyonce want to be like him? In her own way, Beyonce has subtly reached this goal. As a female artist she has remained persistent in her talent such as Michael Jackson and even followed in his footsteps in becoming a solo artist to further in her career, she is often referred to as the “female Michael Jackson” by many of her peers and fans. Beyonce’s style of singing can be described as having a profound vocal virtuoso and gold star voice with versatility. What this means is that she has excellent skills in managing her vocals and the way she uses them. In recent conversations, it has been said that Beyonce’ used to run miles on end singing at the top of her lungs to gain control of her breathing while singing on stage. This determination and discipline is made evident every time she hits the stage. Her stage presence is unlike any other. She is able to sing live without lip syncing like many other artists do and also keep her energy up, she is able to keep her audience engaged with every move she makes on stage. She has sell out all over the country and other countries as well because of the natural talent she exudes.

Besides singing influencers, Beyonce’ also has influencers that has helped in her performative art as a dancer. Josephine Baker, has been a major influence on Beyonce’ during her years as a performer. Her hit debut song “Deja Vu” in her album B’Day Beyonce’ paid homage to the late dancer and activist in her music video as well as at the 2006 Fashion Rocks concert wearing Baker’s trademark mini-hula skirt embellished with fake bananas. These are just the foundations on which Beyonce’s career started.

All Eyes on me: Solo Career

In 2001 the group announced their interests as solo artists. By 2002 Knowles had landed her first solo feature with unbeknownst to her, her future husband Jay-Z on a song called “Bonnie & Clyde”. On June 24, 2003 Knowles finally released her first solo album after Williams and Rowland released their solo projects. Beyonce’s first album Dangerously In Love came with great success selling over eleven million copies sold worldwide and received a record-tying five awards at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. The album was a combination of R&B and Pop music. As the years went by, Beyonce’ gave us hit after hit and album after album that always stayed at the top of the charts. She released record breaking albums like: B’Day (2006), I Am…Sasha Fierce (2008),(2011), Beyonce’ (2013), and her most recent Lemonade (2016) (“Beyonce”).

Lemonade

Beyonce’s latest album, Lemonade, “is a gripping album in and of itself, outside of the fact that Bey’s dipping her toe into the eclectic music pool, because of the multitude of issues it touches on”. In this album alone, Beyonce’s ventures out into eight different genres: R&B, Reggae, Hip Hop, Hip Hop/Rock Fusion, Dance, Country, Ballad and Soul (Callegari, Caitlyn). After the single “Formation” released on February 6, 2016, she performed this same song during the 50th NFL Halftime show. As a collective numerous news outlets reported that she “effortlessly stole the show” from the other artists performing like Bruno Mars and Coldplay, however; the song she decided to perform did not go so well right-wing conservatives. The song “Formation” centers around the concept black people should embrace their afrocentric features as well as taking a stand against police brutality. This started a well needed and heated debate across the country of those who witnessed the performance. The execution of the was flawless. As if the message was not clear enough, Beyonce’ had her backup dancers dress up in black panther get-up costumes with the symbolic black fist held high at the end of the performance (Needman, Alex). It is not doubt that at that point in her career, Beyonce’ was a force to be reckoned with. She cemented her title as one of the greatest entertainers of all time. What made this album so special was that it centered around blackness and its inclusivity. The targeted audience for this album was mainly for black women. Lemonade in my opinion is Beyonce’s best album up to date. The album transcends all of the work Knowles has previously done. The messages within the album touches on topics such as: forgiveness, anger, and love-loss, civil rights and black femininity. This was an album all about black appreciation, power, self-love, and civil rights. Lemonade has been Beyonce’s most critically acclaimed album to date and has received, several BET Awards, Grammy Awards, as well as MTV Awards in 2016 and 2017.

What's Happening Now?

Towards the end of 2016, Beyonce’ shocked the world with her surprise pregnancy announcement with twins with husband, Jay-Z. The twins were born in early June of 2017, which now makes “Mother Bey” the mother of three children: Blue Ivy, and Sir & Rumi Carter. During this year Since, she has been occupied with her pregnancy and newborn children she has not stopped doing what she does most: giving back to community and influencing others. Beyonce’ mentors sisters Halle and Chloe who are teenage proteges that work closely with her, With the right steps, they will most likely take over Beyonce’s enterprise once she retires from music. Besides her musical career Beyonce’ is an outstanding philanthropist. Her most recent donation was towards the Hurricane Harvey release fund. Beyonce’ did a collab with J Balvin, Willy William on a song called “Mi gente”, all of the proceeds went to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund in Houston, Texas where the artist is from (Abad-Santos, Alex) . These are just some examples of how Beyonce’ uses her platform to raise awareness and to uplift black women. Although Knowles has been in the music industry for over twenty years, she is at the climb of her career nowhere near her peak.

Her talent to stay relevant and in the media with barely any scandal nor rumors is monumental in itself. Her skill to keep her personal life private and out of the limelight is was makes Beyonce’ so exclusive and virtually irreplaceable by any artist in mainstream media. Her unproblematic nature and indescribable vocal talent is what makes her one the greatest entertainers of all time similar to Michael Jackson. Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter is a timeless performer and the certified legend of our generation.
