Hip Hop was created in the early 1970s in New York City, specifically the Bronx. This genre is characterized by verbal and lyrical delivery over rhythms and beats. Although Hip Hop music is what has been the basis, the music is just one part of the wide range of creative expression that is known as Hip Hop culture. Hip Hop includes art forms such as graffiti breakdancing, MCEEing, beatboxing, and DJing. Rap was derived from cultural African traditions of storytelling, and Jamaican tradition of toasting which introduced the idea of raping and dancing over instrumental tracks.

In the art I created, I took all of the names of popular Hip Hop artists from 1981 to the present. In the video we watched, it is evident that Hip Hop culture is ever changing and evolving. The Hip Hop music our parents grew up listening to is very different from the music we indulge in today. I chose to shape all of the names in the shape of a plug because in today’s rap culture a term “da plug” has been invented and used to describe someone who is so great at what they do everyone else seeks their help and expertise. All of the artists mentioned completely exemplify that and are all considered “plugs” in the rap game. I thoroughly enjoy Hip Hop music and culture and am excited to see how it continues to change.
