By: Toni Hall
Describe the role of music in African and AA communities. Give examples.
The role in African and African American communities is to bring the people together. Music is used for every type of event. African and African American communities use music to bring people together for every emotion: happiness, sadness, stress, and anger. For example, music plays at weddings, funerals, work, and for recreational purposes.
Describe the way music is created, preformed, and experienced in African and AA communities.
their life on a plantation. It was created by singing, dancing, clapping, stomping, and rattle shaking. These songs were performed typically in groups. This music was experienced through hardship. These songs and rituals were used for religious reasons and the songs helped the slaves get through the tough time they were experiencing. This musical process has passed down to African Americans in modern society. For example, African American church goers still sing, dance, clap, stomp, and use instruments to praise their God often when going through a hard time.
Describe ways in which the described timbre in Africa and AA music differs from that of European-derived traditions.
Timbre in African and African American differs from European derived traditions because Africans and African Americans have their instruments imitate the voice in African and African American music to alter the timbre. Europeans use to African/African American music. Africans/ African Americans changed the way they would play western instruments to get a particular sound.
Describe the two most common musical structures found in African and African American music. In what ways do they reflect the communal and interactive approach to making music.
The two most common musical structures found in African and African American music were call and response and shout songs. Call and Response is when a singer sings a line in the song and it is followed up by another singer or group with a different line of the song. Shout songs are a loud praise break in the middle of a religious/gospel song. They reflect the communal and interactive approach to making music because both call and response and shout require a congregation or group to perform it.
