What is a Jubilee Quartet?

In the first half of the 20th century Jubilee-Qaurtet's were very popular, they were religious African American music groups. It originated from the insitution Fisk University in 1871.

The word Jubilee derives from the word yobhel which is Hebrew. 

The Fisk Jubilee singers originally started the group to raise funds for the college

Members consisted of:

Moiro Konchellah, Brandon Singleton, Albert Smith, Darcie Chism, Brandon Magee, Donte Cleaves, Joslyn Keel, Wesley Trigg and more.

The Dixie Hummingbirds

The Dixie Hummingbirds are a gospel Jubilee group that was started in Greenville South Carolina in 1928. The Humming Birds influenced Jackie Wilson, and James Brown their style and sound continues to be heard throughout gospel/soul music today. A National Heritage Fellowship was awarded to the Hummingbirds by the National Endowment for the Arts (highest honor in folk and traditional arts.)

Members of the Dixie Hummingbirds currently consist of:William Bright and Lyndon Jones. 

Past members consisted of over 10 singers. 

 

James Davis was the founder of the Dixie Hummingbirds.

Jubilee quartets continue to have an influence on modern gosepl,soul and R&B music. Without these historical groups and inspirational people this genre of music would cease to be equivalent to what it is today.
