In the 1930s, swing jazz was a popular style of music. The music was centered around the piano. It was often danced to in night clubs. Some popular swing jazz artists during this time were Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Ella Fitzgerald( queen of scat). Swing jazz also coincided with the civil rights movement. 

In the 1940s, bebop was a popular style of music. Bebop took jazz in a new direction since artists during this time had their own forms of expression. Some popular bebop artists during this time were Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Bebop also coincided with World War II as well as the civil rights movement.
