Jubilee Quartets – Tyara Petty

Within this period, Jubilee quartets came about within the Jubilee, Transitional, and Gospel periods.  Jubilee quartet is a musical genre that began in the mid-1800s and surpassed the African-American university singing movement.  These groups put their own style and twist on negro-spiritual music. The call-and-response motifs and four-part harmonies that characterize this religious music genre were borrowed and inspired from Negro spirituals and folk music.

            The Fisk University and Tuskegee quartets were the most renowned quartets. They helped open the way for the genre by performing for the African-American community to combat the discriminatory conditions of the day and convey love and hope. In addition to being accomplished vocalists, the Jubilee Quartets were icons of perseverance and optimism for the African-American community.  They served as representations of fortitude and tenacity in the face of difficulty.  As they traveled the nation, frequently facing prejudice and segregation, their music provided African-American communities with a source of strength and hope.
