Jazz was born about 100 years ago in New Orleans. The music is rooted in Africa and Europe. New Orleans became the city for jazz because it is a port city. There were and agree still so many different cultures within New Orleans.

To look deeper into where the music got its foundation, one would have to understand the sound of negro spirituals.

In order to understand how the music is created and played, improvisation is key. No tune or key is really ever played the same twice. Jazz has its own language. The musicians have to be able to understand the "musical conversation" that takes place. Jazz is probably one of the most difficult to play without having a musical ear.

Musical elements:
-note
-melody
-chord

Each instrument has a particular responsibility.
- Horns: (saxaphone, trumpet, trombone) are responsible for playing the melodies, both written and improvisions.
- Rythm sections: (piano, bass, and drums) accompany and provide support got the horn player. The pianist plays chords. The bass sets the foundation. The drummer keeps the beat steady and complement what the soloists arre playing.
- Guitar: The guitar simply has to be versatile.

Jazz has now become music of America. All people regardless of culture, religion, creed etc listen to jazz. It is a neutral sound that all can gravitate towards. This music has set foundations for many artists to come and expand on it.
