Heart/Beat Ballet Review

The Atlanta Ballet featured a new show titled Heart/Beat that included elements of jazz and gospel musical elements.  I thought it was very interesting that these different genres were incorporated into the show because they aren’t usually associated with ballet.  The “Sunrise Divine” set of the show was the most interesting to me. This element made the show more entertaining for me because of my own familiarity with gospel music.  I feel like this is one of the main parts of the show that separates it from other shows.  Gospel music is the root of many other genres of music and it gave the show a deep connection to African influences. I felt a personal connection to the show because of the incorporation of the Spelman Glee Club in the show as well.  This element provided a connection to the surrounding Atlanta community.  Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the ballet because it wasn’t what I was expecting.  It was a more modern take on my understanding of traditional ballet and that made it more entertaining.
