History

Gangsta Rap is a subgenre of hip-hop music that emerged in the late 1980s but has origins that can be traced back to the 1970s. During the 70s and 80s, hip-hop was a relatively new and underground genre that was associated with dance battles and block parties in the Bronx, New York City. As hip-hop spread to other parts of the country, a new style of rap emerged that focused on the harsh realities of life in the inner city. It was first known as “reality rap” and it often addressed issues of police brutaility, gang violence, poverty, and drug use. However, it was not until the late 1980s that gangsta rap began to emerge as a distinct genre. During this time was the rise of the crack epidemic which had a big impact on African American urban communties. It fueled the mass incarceration of black men, poverty, and violence. However, West Coast artists like N.W.A, Geto Boys, and Ice-T played a vital role in the success of this genre and brought a new level of agression and rawness to the genre and allowed for it be a form of artistic expression.

Gangsta Rap is characterized by its often controversial and explicit lyrics. It describes in graphic detail the realities of life in the inner city to paint a vivid picture of their experiences. These lyrics often included drug use, gang violence, poverty and profanity. This genre however, did not come without critics and controversy. Critics of gangsta rap argued that it promoted harmful attitudes and negative stereotypes. Despite its controversial content, gangsta rap was embraced by hip-hop fans and remained a popular and influential subgenre of hip-hop music. Artists continued to utilize this subgenre to express their perspectives and experiences on life in the inner city and others utilized it as a launching pad for successfull careers in music/entertainment.
