  • Donny Hathaway was one of the smoothest voices in soul music during the ’70s.
  • Hathaway was born October 1, 1945, in Chicago, IL.
  • Hathaway moved to St. Louis and started singing in church at the age of 3.
  • Hathaway studied music at Howard University on a full-ride scholarship in 1964.
  • After 3 years at Howard, Hathaway left to pursue job opportunities in the record industry.
  • Hathaway worked as a producer, arranger, songwriter and session pianist/keyboardist.
  • Hathaway worked with Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler, the Staple Singers and many others.
  • Hathaway did a duet with Roberta Flack, covering Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” The cover reached Top Ten on the R&B charts.
  • Hathaway and Flack released an album of duets in 1972 which topped the R&B charts, went Top Five in pop and won a Grammy.
  • Hathaway died at the age of 33.
