Lift Every Voice: Marien Anderson, Florence B. Price and The Sound of Sisterhood

This article was about Marien Anderson and how she helped revolutionized the musical world. Marien Anderson performed, Florence Price’s Negro Spiritual, ” My soul is Anchored In the Lord” at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 in front of 75,000 people.

Anderson’s performance was something many black musicians did as a way to express their political positions during progressing. The majority of her audience was white male decision-makers and unsisterly white women, so this performance of Marien Anderson and of Florence B. Price masterpiece “My Soul is Anchored” can be seen as politically lead. Marien was trying to show the audience her perspective.
