A Message To Hip Hop at 50, From Sloan Louis

Dear Hip Hop,

If I could describe you in one word it would be multifaceted. Not only are you one of the greatest genres of music, but you have influenced the lives of so many through your infectious beats and meaningful lyrics. Despite being judged at times for referencing “violence and crimes” you also allow for creative interpretation through sub genres like conscious hip hop and jazz hip hop. You allow others from varying backgrounds to connect with one another, which is more than I can say for the rest of the genres of music. Personally, you have been an outlet, favorite pastime and confidant. At times when I may be unable to articulate my feelings I’ll play a song or two that reflects my inner thoughts. Hip Hop is by far my favorite genre and I am thankful to have been able to experience the artistry of various generations. Each era displays a different meaning, especially within the Black community as you have been a pillar for self-expression and creativity. I do think that certain aspects of you could be tailored a little bit, considering the demographic of your audience(s) today. Certain word choices could be altered in a way that still gets the message of the songs across, while still being tasteful and appropriate. However, I am looking forward to seeing what lies ahead in the future. You have already expanded far beyond the expectations of many, I am sure that the future holds nothing but everlasting success. I love that there are no boundaries to what can be considered hip hop, that quality is so advantageous to your growth. In closing, I just want to say thank you for your impact on the music industry, Black American culture and culture worldwide, fashion, the media, entertainment and most importantly the lives of your listeners.

Yours truly,

Sloan Louis
