A message to Hip Hop at 50 from – Chelsey Gasque

Dear Bestie Westie,

I miss you so much. How’s school going? School is going great for me so far. We just finished midterms and I was #stressed lol. Anyways, it’s been far too long since we last caught up, and I find myself missing you more with each passing day. I trust that you’re doing well, but I’d still love to hear all about your life lately.First and foremost, I want you to know that I know you, my friend. I know your heart, your passions, and your character. I’ve seen you grow and evolve, and I’m thankful for the wonderful person you are. There are countless things I appreciate about you, but what I admire the most is your unwavering determination and kindness. Now, onto the more serious note. I’ve noticed you’ve been treading some uncertain paths recently. You know I’ll always support you, but I must express my concern if I believe you might be heading in the wrong direction. I say this out of love and genuine care for you. Please remember that your well-being is my utmost priority, and I’m here for you no matter what. Now, let’s talk about something we both have a deep connection to: Hip-Hop. I remember the countless hours we spent listening to hip-hop music and discussing its history and evolution. It’s fascinating to see how this genre has changed over the years. From the old-school days of DJ Kool Herc’s block parties to the East Coast-West Coast rivalry with Tupac and Biggie, and the rise of incredible female artists like Foxy Brown, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj, the hip-hop world has witnessed tremendous growth. I may have strayed away from hip-hop and found solace in gospel music, but my heart still holds a special place for the classics, especially from the 80s to the early 2000s. Those golden eras of hip-hop had a unique vibe and storytelling that’s hard to replicate. It’s incredible how artists like Timbaland, Sexxy Redd, and Ice Spice contributed to the sound that shaped our generation. As for the outlook of hip-hop, it continues to be a force in the music industry. It’s diversifying, adapting, and giving voice to the unheard. I hope that it continues to evolve in ways that resonate with you and align with your values. In closing, I just want you to know that my love and appreciation for you remain unwavering. I’m excited to hear from you, catch up, and share some old-school hip-hop tracks. No matter where life takes you, I’m confident you’ll make the best choices, and I’ll be here cheering you on every step of the way.Stay true to yourself, and remember that our friendship is a treasure I hold close to my heart.

With all my love,

Chelsey Gasque
