  • Whitney Elizabeth Houston was one of the biggest female pop stars of all time.
  • Houston was one of the first artists ever to have seven consecutive singles hit number one.
  • Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963.
  • By age 11, Houston was a soloist in the junior gospel choir at her church.
  • As a teenager, Houston accompanied her mother in concert and sang backup for artists like Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson and Chaka Khan.
  • Houston’s first single appearance was a debut with Teddy Pendergrass, “Hold Me.” It reached number five on the R&B chart in 1984.
  • In February of 1985, Houston released her debut album, Whitney Houston. “You Give Good Love,” was on this album and became Houston’s first hit, topping the R&B chart and hitting number three on the Hot 100.
  • Whitney Houston sold over 13 million copies in the U.S., making it the best-selling debut ever by a female artist.
  • Following Whitney Houston, Whitney was released in 1987. It became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one. It sold over 9 million copies in the U.S.
  • Whitney contained four singles, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional,” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” which all hit number one.
  • In July of 1992, Houston married ex-New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she had her only child, their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.
  • Her 1998 album, ‘My Love Is Your Love’ was well reviewed but the drug abuse began to affect her reputation.
  • Her 2009 comeback album ‘I Look To You’ was positively received and sold well, but promotional performances were still marred by her weakened voice.
  • Houston’s final acting performance was in Sparkle (2012) (a remake of the 1976 movie, Sparkle (1976)). It was released after her death.
  • Houston died February 11, 2012.
