On September 9th and 11th of 2024, the historical Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs partnered with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to perform in Morehouse College’s King’s Chapel and the State Farm Arena on the Tabernacle Choir’s tour stop in Atlanta, Georgia. The concert was nothing short of a masterpiece as over 300 Tabernacle Choir members traveled from Utah to share the stage with the collegiate choirs. All three choirs performed individual pieces, and at the end of the night, came together with one voice to sing familiar songs like “What a Wonderful World” and to debut new songs to the audience.
As a member of the Spelman Glee Club, being a part of this historical moment was undeniably special. When I am able to look back on the amount of work that was poured into making sure the Glee Club was prepared for a big moment like this as soon as we stepped foot on campus. I always say that music is a language that humans are essentially programmed to know, regardless or where they’re from, what they look like, or what language they speak. These two concerts represent unity. In the combination of two seemingly opposite cultures, all differences in age, religion, gender, or any other factor that distinguishes one from another were cast away the second we opened our mouths to make music. We conveyed a universal message of love, joy, and hope to all the audience members and thousands of people who watched virtually. I feel as though not only did the concerts create unity between all three choirs, but it helped us to remember that at the end of the day, we are all really the same, and we are tasked with the duty of loving our neighbor as ourselves. I believe that the only thing that can do that is music, no matter what culture it comes from.
Below is a video that demonstrates the universality of music and how it connects us interpersonally.
