What is Funk?

Funk originated in the mid-1960’s by African American people. It is a mixture of soul, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Some characteristics of Funk music include rhythm and tempo, harmony, vocals, electric guitar, and keyboards. Costumes were also a major part of Funk music. There are many different types of Funk, including Synth funk and Jazz-funk. Funk was a way for black people to express themselves through music and dance. 

Popular artists include James Brown, who brought Funck to the mainstream world. Dyke and The Blazers was also a very popular music group, who had influence from James Brown and his band. Funkadelic was also a prominent feature in the Funk music world. Early disco song also originated from Funk music. Funk is still used in many songs as background music and even remixed by popular Hip Hop artist Dr. Dre.
