What Difference Does It Make?

Throughout history and to this day, music has played a huge role in the development of society. Music has the power to influence those who listen and has shaped how we think and how we act. In the times of slavery, negro spirituals developed a sense of hope and community amongst slaves. When it seemed as though freedom would never come, music pushed slaves to keep going and fighting against the system. In today’s day and age, music is still constantly shaping the way we live.  As an oppressed group, black people are able to use music as a form of expression and creativity. Music provides a free outlet for expression of emotion in response to this oppression.
