Folk

This genre was created by African-Americans. It is one of the oldest documented genres created by African-Americans. Folk is a blend of traditional sounds from the homeland of Africa and sounds cultivated on American soil.

Folk instruments

A “rope tuned skin covered” drum. Originated from Africa. Can be played with hands.

Banjo

An instrument that can vary in number of strings. The banjo can vary from 4, 5, or 6 strings. It was orginally made from animal skin but can now be substituted for plastic.  The strings play unique chords and melodies in conjuction with the percussion instruments to create the folk sound.

Wash Board

Slave masters sought to opress slaves by any means. Often times some masters would not allow slaves to possess or play drums, so slaves created washboards to carry out tunes.  Wash board were initially intended for washing clothes.
