SZA is a neo singer and songwriter whose music has been characterized as alternative R&B with elements of soul, hip hop, minimalist R&B, indie rock, cloud rap, witch house, and chillwave. SZA’s lyrics have been described as “unravelling,” and her tracks frequently deal with themes of sensuality, nostalgia, and separation.
Solána Imani Rowe, was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1989 and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, she began making music in the early 2010s. Music was much more than music for her. It was a way for her to express her downfalls and heartbreaks she experienced through life.
See.SZA.Run is SZA’s debut EP. This project she released on her own. She recorded this ep with just a couple of friends and neighbors with beats they stole from online. She had just recently graduated college and jumped right into her passion, making music.
After receiving positive feedback from her peers and locals she went on to release 2 more eps called S and Z. S was released in 2013 and Z was released in 2014. S was released shortly after SZA had a meeting with independent label, Top Dawg. Top Dawg was so interested in the new artist that they ended up giving her a contract with the label and she became the first female artist at the label. Shortly after, she released her 3rd ep, Z under her new label, Top Dawg.
Ctrl is Sza’s debut album. It was released on June 9, 2017 by Top Dawg Entertainment and RCA Records. Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy, and Isaiah Rashad all make appearances on the new album. The album original name was supposed to be A to go along with her previous eps, S and Z. she later changed the name to CTRL. Ctrl is SZA’s top project. The project was number 3 on the billboards top 100 list and was platinum and many of the songs on the album hit gold including the song released featuring artist, Travis Scott.
Throughout her career, SZA has earned fourteen Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, and an Academy Award nomination. She has earned one American Music Award, one Billboard Music Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, two BET Awards, including Best New Artist in 2018, and received the “Rulebreaker Award” at the Billboard Women in Music event in 2018. SZA also won the Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist in 2017.
SZA is a unique artist. She isn’t like many of the artist in her field. She’s often referred to as a musical fairy because she speaks about raw experiences in a very soulful beautiful way that many other artist can portray. She has a way of taking majestic sounds and making them her own. She’s only been a known artist for about 8 years but she is making her mark slowly but surely. She has the potential to be bigger than ever.
