Sallie Martin ( 1895-1988)
Early Life/Career
Arranger and gospel singer, Sallie Martin was born in Pittsfield,Georgia. Mrs.Martin started singing in her church in her early twenties. Soon Sallie heard about the king of gospel, Thomas Dorsey from a friend of hers. Martin Auditioned for Dorsey later and had a little of a struggle. Yet she still made it and moved to Chicago to join the choir directed by Dorsey himself.
Middle Life/Career
With him, Sallie and Thomas founded the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. During the 1930s she also served as Dorsey’s bookkeeper and song demonstrator, singing and selling Dorsey’s work in churches and conventions.
Late Life/Career
Yet in 1940 Martin left Dorsey to help start the Martin and Morris Publishing Company, in which then published the famous “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”. This song made a name for her and the Sallie martin singers. Her publishing and and sing lasted for 30 years .

Achievements/Awards
Martin co founded The National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. She was a loyal supporter of the Civil rights movement.

Mrs. Martin was a big influence for songs back in the early 1900s. Like her participation in the civil rights movements. She influenced songs made for the rights movements.
OPINION
My opinion on Sallie Martin is just respect. Like, the amount of power she put into the genre of gospel is amazing to me. I just think that she needs to be more know because i didn’t know before this project.
