Evolution of Jubilee Quartet
Jubilee Period(1870's-1930's) - The Fisk Jubilee singers whom started in 1870 truly set the model for quartet singing. This style was more focused on preserving African American spirituals and was sung in a more formal style.
Transitional Period(1930-1945) As African American music began to evolve, so did jubilee quartets. In the transnational period a more radio friendly jubilee quartet could be observed. Content performed began to transition from strictly spiritual to more entertainment based.
The Gospel Period(1946-1969)
After World War II, the jubilee quartet transitions to what is more properly recognized as a gospel quartet. The United States saw a rise in more commercial and mainstream gospel music. Performances became more emotionally intense and mimicked call and response patterns.
