New Orleans, LA, was known as the “birthplace of jazz” music. Over 100 years ago, during the 1800s, New Orleans was a cultural mecca (a cosmopolitan) within America. This was a “music city” as there were many cultures and backgrounds that influenced the music being played within different areas.
To name a few contributors, there were:
- French and Spanish bals (dances)
- Masques (masked dances)
- Resident opera and ballet companies
- Military parade bands
- All manner of ambient serenading
