The Blackest Sound

BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVORED

Gospel music was created by African- Americans and was influenced heavily influenced by Negro spirituals and Jubilee Quartets. It surfaced in the late 19th century/ early 20th century. It can be distinguished by its joyous and uplifting expression of love and gratitude for God. It can also be distinguished by the clapping and shouting.  Gospel is an extension of the Christian belief.  Many instruments are used to create gospel including the drums, piano, organ, and bass. Choirs typically perform gospel sometimes with a lead singer or central act.

Today’s Gospel has completely transitioned from its roots of negro spirituals into a multi million dollar industry. Singers of gospel now go on worldwide tours and sell out arenas.
