The Banjo in Folk Music

Origin

The banjo is a hand made  string instrument. It consist of a hallow drum-like boys and a neck that is accompanied by three or four strings. Together, these parts have formed beautiful musical sounds and melodies for centuries. Contrary to popular knowlege, the banjo actually originated in West Africa. The modern day banjo is similar to the ngoni and salaam in antique West African culture. The banjo was introduced in the Americas by slaves that were brought here during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Many slaves  were used as entertainment by their owns. recreated their native instruments which led to the creation of the banjo.

The banjo's role in folk music

Folk music originated during slavery in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Folk music is made with many different instruments including the fiddle, accordion, harmonica, and of course the banjo. The banjo is one of the most common and notable string instruments heard in folk music. The sounds of these instruments joined together make beautiful music that is still listened  to, made and celebrated today.
