Thank You for a Great Semester- Erin’s Final Words

After registering for Survey of African American Music, I was under the impression that this would be a lecture-based class where we would have read about each genre, and have a corresponding assignment. To my surprise, this class was nothing like that. Before diving into the semester I was unsure if I would enjoy this class, given that I am not a music major, and was only taking the class to fulfill my fine arts requirement. However, the interactive format of the class kept me engaged. I enjoyed learning about all of the music styles, as most of what I learned about music, in general, I did not know before. This class really allowed me to appreciate African American music, and its influence on popular culture today. Dr. Johnson made the course exciting with his lively personality. Overall I enjoyed this semester in this course, and have a much greater understanding of African American music.
