Course Description

This course is designed as a historical survey of selected styles of African-American music in the United States. It will focus on identifying and tracing the retention of West African musical features as they manifest in various genres of African-American music. The course will place special emphasis on stylistic characteristics, influential performers, and the social and cultural contexts that shaped these musical forms. This course satisfies the Fine Arts requirement and has no prerequisites.

Learning Objectives

  • Communicate proficiently about the connections between music, history, and culture through discussion, presentations, and written responses.
  • Relate the emergence of musical styles and aesthetic ideals to historical and cultural developments within the African-American community.
  • Analyze the role of African-American music in American politics, particularly in the context of presidential elections and social movements.
  • Recognize and understand musical styles and genres through a prescribed listening regimen.
  • Conduct research on a topic related to the course and present findings in an innovative online format.
  • Write analytical and reflective commentary on the impact of African-American music, with a focus on its cultural and political significance.

  • Express informed perspectives on the African-American creative enterprise, particularly as it relates to contemporary issues like hip-hop culture and music in political advertising.

Course Materials

Primary Resource: BlackMusicScholar.com - This website acts as the course's "textbook" and primary source of information.

Supplementary Readings: Assigned throughout the semester and accessible via Canvas.

Technology Requirements: Access to a computer or device with internet connectivity for Canvas, Zoom, and other online resources.

Course Structure

The course will be delivered in person, with supplemental materials and activities available on Canvas and BlackMusicScholar.com. Students will engage in a blend of individual and group activities, including reading assignments, viewing presentations, listening to music, participating in discussion forums, taking quizzes, and completing group projects.

Expectations

Students are expected to actively participate in all class activities and discussions. Assignments must be submitted on time; late submissions will be penalized. Academic integrity is paramount; violations will be handled according to Spelman College’s policies.
