Student Critique – Celine Nyatome

This article was not what I was expecting, given the title. The author gives us a synopsis of Frank Ocean’s history in the music industry and how he became a solo artist. While it does give information on Ocean’s discography, it is more on what songs they like best, and not the cadence or lyricism of his album and why it “changed” the music industry. Overall, no substance in terms of discussing how Frank Ocean changed the music industry by fact, more of an opinionated article. Good if you want an overall review for the album if you are interested in listening to it, I just think the title should be changed in terms of staying on topic.

I like how this article presents itself on how SZA used her personal experiences of sorrow and lyrcism to connect to those who related, as well as her unique timbre of melodic tones and runs, she constantly becomes top charted in many of the songs she releases, such as “Broken Clocks,” “Love Galore,” and “Snooze”. Sza believes that she shouldn’t be confined to one genre, as it feels restricting. Many would call her music “sad-girl music”, but she believes that sadness is as deserving of inquiry as the rest of the emotions. Because of this, many women feel that she speaks what they relate to- the good, the bad, and the ugly. Because of this, her success has exponentially grown, with albums such as CTRL having longevity and being constantly repeated after many years of taking a music industry Hiatus. Five years later, she came out with a new album called “SOS,” with 20 songs charting billboards top 100, as well as 2 songs reaching No. 1  during the first week.
