Student Critique- Analiese Poe

In the article titled “Belize-born composer is the first Black woman to be the Master of the King’s Music,” the journey of Errollyn Wallen before being appointed the Master of the King’s Music is discussed. According to the article, this position is highly regarded as the Master composes music for “special royal occasions.” I find that the article allows readers to understand her musical passion that originated from a young age and continued to grow as she entered rooms where Black women musicians had never been before. Despite her qualifications, Wallen experienced prejudice from within the white male-dominated field of composers. This article effectively educates readers on the realities that Errollyn Wallen had to face as she worked hard to become the Master of the King’s Music. Despite the effectiveness of this article, it lacks organization. The article details her journey but does not do so in an organized manner. For example, the article jumps from Wallen’s achievements in the 1990s to 2020 and then back to 2009. This makes it more difficult for the reader to follow along. Aside from this literary confusion, I find that this article highlights the magnificent artistry of Errollyn Wallen and the decades of work she has put in for black musicians to thrive. Overall, this article is informative for those studying the impacts of black musicians and their experiences.
In the article, Black Music Sunday: Celebrating Jazz Genius Wayne Shorter,” the writer opens this piece in a celebratory manner, highlighting Wayne Shorter’s impact. Though I can conclude the importance of Shorter, I dislike the constant inclusion of excerpts and documentaries about Shorter. The writer does not extensively detail the life of Shorter as they continue to link videos. I find that I could have researched that on my own. Overall, though I received information from this article the constant outside links served as ultimate distractions.

The article, Click Here details rapper Gunna’s philanthropic efforts. His recent initiative ensures that 30 families receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 for a year. This highlights the program’s priority to fight social injustices especially within the Black community of Georgia. As many rappers are negatively perceived, I find that this article provides readers with a refreshing view on Gunna specifically. Overall, I appreciate the inclusion of this article on the website.
