Student Critique

Chloe X Halle

In this post, the student gave a comprehensive review of Chloe x Halle’s career, cataloging it’s start from acting in TV shows like Grown-ish, and movies like Let It Shine, the awards they’ve received, like their 2018 Grammys,   and their discography, which includes hits like Do It and Ungodly Hour. The author of this post doesn’t talk about their solo careers at all and even incorrectly states that Chloe, instead of Halle, is playing the little mermaid. I like that their social involvement is discussed by I wish this post was created later so that the author could discuss how much their careers have flourished separately especially in terms of current album/single releases.

Mariah The Scientist

In this post, the author goes over Mariah’s career. I appreciate how she included what the artist was doing before she switched to music. She also details what she’s accomplished during her short career and what she’s doing now, which I also appreciate. I find it interesting that the author didn’t mention Young Thug, who had a great influence on her music. The author ended with a discography and her personal opinion on Mariah, which I thought was interesting to include.

Cleo Sol

In this post, the author details Cleo Sol and her discography. I found this interesting because I didn’t go into the class knowing much about her. I was surprised that she has been active for as long as she’s been active, which was 2008. I also don’t know much about how she compares to other Neo-Soul artists, but her discography seems strong. I like how it talked about her musical influences as well, and the effect that being Jamaican had on her.

Midwestern Music

In this post, the author talks about how the Midwest has influenced music from the viewpoint of an Indiana native. As another Indiana native I was very curious to see how my small state has changed music. She also discussed cities like Chicago and Detroit, which have both had an undeniable influence on Black music culture. I wish she discussed Black music a bit more, but I understand it can be difficult to find Black midwestern artists in smaller cities unlike Detroit or Chicago.
