Student Critique
This article describes jazz’s deep, enriching history in the United States. I enjoyed how the article personified Jazz as a person, with phrases such as “Jazz, the wild child of music burst onto the scene” or “Imagine jazz as the cool cat in a speakeasy.” This way of writing shows the reader how vibrant and spirited Jazz music is, which I found engaging. However, I wish this article had talked more about the pioneers of jazz music, specifically cosmic jazz. The article solely focused on Sun Ra, an American Jazz composer. However, the article’s title did not indicate that the article would focus on him. Despite this minor issue, I found the article interesting and engaging.
This article focuses on R&B artist Bryson Tiller. The author splits the article into four sections: his background, his musical inspiration, his style, and the author’s favorite album. I enjoyed the structure of this article when discussing each of these topics; it was clear, concise, and easy to follow. However, I did not like the author’s analysis of his album Trapsoul. This analysis was too personal for the article and could have been a separate article strictly focusing on analyzing his discography. This article should only have discussed Tiller’s life and music, and the author’s opinion made the article too personal.
This article discusses the background of the flourishing black female rapper Flo Milli. The author gives a slight background on her life and quickly dives into her musical history and discography. I didn’t particularly appreciate how the author lists off her songs and does not discuss her artistry or history on a deeper level. This article felt very rushed and surface-level. As a fan of Flo Milli, I know that she has discussed her music and her life as a female rapper on a deeper level, and I wish that the author talked more about those important topics.
