Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert Interview
By Avery Simpson
This year’s Christmas Carol Concert, held on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, brought together the Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs for a celebration of music, tradition, and community. I had the opportunity to interview my friend, Dalyn Booker, who has been part of the Spelman Glee Club for two years, about her experience performing in this iconic event.
The Reward of Hard Work
As Dalyn reflected on completing her second Christmas concert, she shared how rewarding it felt. “It’s such a fulfilling experience because of all the work we put into it,” she said. Even though other commitments limited her involvement this year, she expressed a deep desire to impact others through music, just as the concert has impacted her. This passion is a testament to the dedication shared by every member of the Glee Club.
What Makes the Concert Special
When asked what makes the Christmas Carol Concert so unique, Dalyn emphasized the months of preparation and heart that go into it. Rehearsals for the mixed choir portions begin right after fall break in October, and the commitment from everyone involved truly shines. Beyond the technicalities, she described the concert as a “healer,” noting how music brings people together, especially during the holiday season. The blend of voices from the Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs, coupled with the joyous spirit of the season, creates an unforgettable experience.
The Role of the Audience
Despite the challenges of performing for a recording—which limits audience reactions like clapping—Dalyn noted that the energy from attendees was tangible. “Sunday was the most energy we had,” she shared. The choir feeds off the audience’s visible and physical joy, making each performance even more powerful.
Favorite Moments and Songs
One of Dalyn’s favorite songs to perform was “We Are Christmas,” the final piece of the concert. She described it as “beautiful and emotional,” capturing the spirit of the event. The set list also included other memorable pieces like “Hodie,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Glory to God,” and “Children, Go Where I Send Thee.” These performances highlighted the range and depth of the Spelman Glee Club, as well as the collaboration with Morehouse.
Hopes for Next Year
Looking ahead, Dalyn expressed her hope to see more gospel music integrated into future concerts, both in the mixed choir sets and the Spelman Glee Club’s repertoire. “Gospel touches your soul differently,” she said, adding that it would be a meaningful way to honor the roots of Black American music in addition to a lot of the spirituals they sing and fully appreciate its cultural significance.
A Space to Belong
When asked about her favorite thing about being in the Glee Club, Dalyn reflected on how special it is to be in a space where everyone looks like her. Surrounded by talented singers with a shared passion for music, she feels motivated and inspired. “I’ve been singing all my life, but this is the first time I’ve been in a space like this,” she said. She also highlighted the impact of her director, Doc, who she said is both hilarious and an incredibly talented musician.
Closing Thoughts
Dalyn explained that the Christmas Carol Concert is more than just a performance; it’s a celebration of tradition, community, and the power of music. The dedication of the Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs, coupled with the support of an enthusiastic audience, make this event a highlight of the holiday season. The event brings joy to listeners but also leaves a lasting impact on the performers themselves.
Tis the season to be jolly!
