Tabernacle Choir Hope World Tour: State Farm Arena with Spelman and Morehouse Glee Club
Overview
On Setpember 11 at 7pm Spelman College and Morehouse College Glee Club joined the Mormon Tabernacle choir for an electric concert at the State Farm Arena. The songs included a mix of negro spirituals and gospel songs to create one melodic sound. The concert was conducted by Kevin Johnson, Dr. David Morrow, and Ryan Murphy.
Concert Description
The Morehouse Glee Club opened the performance with “Great and Glorious” by Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn. Following this, they sang “I Ain’t Got Weary Yet,” arranged by Courtney Carey, a Morehouse alumnus with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The Spelman Glee Club began their set with “Wade in the Water,” a powerful African American spiritual that dates back to slavery, used to guide enslaved Africans to freedom. Unlike the traditional version, their rendition speeds up when the choir joins the lead, showcasing their wide range of vocal complexity. Their next selection, “Children Go Where I Send Thee,” incorporates African rhythms and instrumentation. They concluded with “A Choice to Change the World,” inspired by the school’s tagline and written by Spelman alumna Sarah Benibo and Dr. Kevin Johnson.
Overall Response
Overall, I believe the concert was a beautiful ensemble that seamlessly blended different styles of music into a captivating performance. The combination of classical hymns, African American spirituals, and contemporary pieces created a rich, diverse musical experience. Each choir brought its unique flair to the performance, showcasing the depth and versatility of their vocal talents. The Morehouse Glee Club’s strong, resonant harmonies paired perfectly with the dynamic, soulful expression of the Spelman Glee Club. This concert was not just a display of vocal skill but also a celebration of culture, history, and the inspiring power of music.
