Ragtime

Ragtime is popularly known for its syncopated melodies, and its derivative from jazz. The genre emerged from musicians in Mississippi and Missourui in the late 19th century. Borrowing its influence from already established sounds such as minstrel-show music, banjo sounds, and dance rhythms of the cakewalk, ragtime create charter for its sound by also using structures from piano compositions. Scott Joplin is often recognized as the King of Ragtime, pioneering the genre with his 1899 famous song titled “The Maple Leaf Rag”. Outside of Scott Joplin, other notable musicians include: Eubie Blake, W.C. Handy, William Bolcom and James Europe.
