Ragtime is a genre names after “rag” times and it’s known for its broken piano melodies that work together to make a fun jig. It originated in the late 19th century stemming from Negro Spirituals and evolved from African American bands with musical styles known as jig piano and piano thumping. By time the 20th century began, ragtime had gained popularity and started to be performed differently by different parts of America. Ernest Hogan produced one of the earliest known sheet music rags and they were a hit in the country. Prior to Hogan, Scott Joplin published A Maple Leaf Rag which also became a hit in the country and was a more sophisticated version of rag in comparison to prior types of rag. Ragtime later developed in to the genre of blues as African Americans continued to be pioneers in Music.
