Gospel Music is a genre of music rooted in spiritual beliefs and experiences. The Gospel music originated in the 17th century, and continues to evolve today. A notable group within the Gospel industry is The  Clark Sisters.

The Clark Sisters is an American gospel group consisting of five sisters, Jacky Clark Chisholm, Denise Clark Bradford, Elbernita ‘Twinkie’ Clark-Terrell, Dorinda Clark-Cole, and Karen Clark Sheard. They are the daughters of the astounding gospel musician and choral director Mattie Moss Clark, who is also the creator of the five-part harmony.

The Clark Sisters were born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Mattie Moss Clark was married twice. She had Leo Jr. and Jacky with her first husband and had Denise, Twinkie, Dorinda, and Karen with her second husband, a pastor.

At a young age, Mattie Moss Clark taught and perfected the singing and harmonization of her daughters. The Clark Sisters had their start singing in their father’s choir and formed their group within that time frame.

The Clark Sisters recorded their first album, Jesus Has A Lot To Give, on their uncle’s Bill Moss record label. They released several small hits but had astounding success with the release of You Brought The Sunshine, which became a massive hit in churches and on dance floors in 1981.

They continued to release several albums and singles under the name The Clark Sisters, albeit two of them had dropped from the group by their last album, until 1994.

More hits include There is a Balm in Gilead and Blessed & Highly Favored.

Karen Clark Sheard, the youngest of the group, married and created a family with John Drew Sheard. Their family consists of two children, J. Drew Sheard II and Kierra Sheard.

Following her mother and her aunts’ footsteps, Kierra Sheard joined the gospel music industry in 2004 with her album I Owe You, giving her a hit single You Don’t Know. This song was inspired by her mother, Karen Clark Sheard, who almost lost her life to a fatal blood clot while in the hospital.

Kierra Sheard continues to make music with her most recent release, You Must Break

On April 11, 2020, the Clark Sisters aired their biopic The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. Produced by Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, and Mary J. Blidge, this film was destined to be great and depict these women with their greatness in mind. The biopic consisted of Aunjanue Ellis as Mattie Moss Clark, Angela Birchett as Jacky Clark Chisholm, Raven Goodwin as Denise Clark Bradford, Christina Bell as Twinkie Clark-Sheard, Shelea Frazier as Dorinda Clark Cole, and Kierra Sheard as Karen Clark Sheard (which was a lovely idea).

Recently, The Clark Sisters have released new music with an album entitled The Return this past year. It can be streamed on all major music platforms.
