The article spoke heavily about the influence of West Indian music into American media. I liked the given examples with mainstream music that many people know, such as “Baby Boy” by Beyoncé and Sean Paul, for example. Feminism in rap- hip-hop project: Brynum Gabrielle A.

The article highlighted the ways womanism has tried to be reclaimed by black women who are seen as the main victims of misogyny in rap music specifically. The article did a good job in pointing out those, such as Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, and Queen Latifah, who have had important roles in giving back power to the voices of women in rap specifically.

Beyoncé 2000 or 2010: Nadia Oakley

With Beyoncé coming up in a time with so much going on in the world, such as pivotal events that have impacted the mood and sounds of music during this time, the article focused on the way this has been shown in her music. I liked the way the article provided background on her particular sounds around this time, and the music she was making such as the song “Survivor” having deep meaning surrounding her group Destiny’s Child.
