Oo, I Like That Jazz!

Jazz originated from Black communities in New Orleans. In the late 1800s, Jazz was founded from its roots – ragtime and blues music. Jazz is also referenced as America’s classical music. Jazz has been a major form of expression in music in the 1920s. It has origins in traditional and popular music styles of both European-American band music as well as African-American cultural lineage that provides this genre its musical qualities. It can be characterized by notes of blues and call-and-response vocals. It has a dominant element of improvisation when it comes to its swing style. Jazz is famous across the globe.

Jazz has changed overtime due to each performer’s influence and interpretation of the musical genre. Jazz is memorable because of its improvisation. The harmonic styles of hymns in America combined with spirituals to form the musical genre Jazz, which is rich with emotion. Many black musicians began to learn how to play instruments from Europe in the nineteenth century. These instruments were used in cakewalks. European-American performers wore blackface and popularized the music across the world. Both of these musical styles continued to be of an influence as Jazz evolved.

When ragtime music started to become popular it influenced many African-American musical stylings as well as Jazz and blues. Blues was developing around the same time as jazz but originated in a different location. Blues was founded from similar African spirituals, work songs and chants. Blues aided in the evolution of Jazz music. The most prominent technique used in jazz music is swing, a rhythmic technique. To name a few of the most notorious artists/bands that played jazz music were D’Jalma Garnier, Louis Armstrong and The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. More recent jazz musical influences are Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Ray Charles.
