Nia DaBass Brat

About Me

Hey Brat’s,  I’m Nia-Simone, but you can call me Nia DaBass Brat. I’m a bassist with a deep love for music, and I’m fortunate enough to play across a wide range of genres, including funk, R&B, neo-soul, pop, reggae, jazz, and rock. My journey with the bass has been shaped by both my passion and my formal education at Berklee College of Music, where I earned two degrees—one in Music Business and another in Bass Performance.

Some of my proudest moments in my career include performing with the largest ensemble in Berklee’s history—the Beyoncé Ensemble—and playing at iconic venues like the House of Blues in Boston. I’ve also had the honor of performing in Abu Dhabi at a Music Seminar, at conventions in Boston’s Financial District, and even at the Massachusetts State House. Each performance has been a unique experience, but I’m always striving to push my sound further.

Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to receive mentorship from some truly incredible musicians, including Grammy-nominated artists like Ledisi and Tia Fuller. I’ve also learned from established bassists such as Winston Macow, Christopher Loftin, and Vaughn Brathwaite, who have played a huge role in shaping my growth as an artist.

For me, music is more than just what I do—it’s who I am. I’m always excited to share my sound, collaborate with others, and keep evolving as a musician.

Simmer Down By Foushee

This song is called Simmer Down by Foushee; I was really inspired after listening to it, so I decided it would be awesome to produce a visualizer and add my own musical twist to it. With the support and guidance from Chloi Skeete (co-producer), we were able to bring my vision to life. I wanted the music video to be true to my image and who I am as an artist – a bassist, a dancer, a punk rock enthusiast, and, most of all, a creative.

The argument at the beginning of the video represents my constant internal battle of outgrowing old habits and taking the risk to step out in faith and grow as a person. Throughout the video, you’ll see glimpses of this struggle, especially in the dance section, where there’s a battle between my “light” and “dark” sides. The destruction of the speaker at the end symbolizes the breaking of my past – the mistakes, the doubts, the fear – and marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life, almost like a coming-of-age moment.

This visual journey is all about transformation, self-discovery, and embracing change. It’s a reflection of how we can evolve from the things that once held us back into the people we are meant to become. I hope you enjoy this visual and musical experience as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Inspirations

I am inspired by trailblazing women such as Esperanza Spalding, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Mahoni Day. As a female bassist, I aspire to tour the world and touch the hearts and ears of many through my music. These incredible artists have paved the way for women in music, and their creativity, resilience, and unique voices continue to inspire me every day.

It is my passion to spread love, healing, and empowerment through the universal language of art. I believe that music has the power to bring people together, to uplift, and to spark change. Whether through the rhythm of my bass or the energy in my performances, I aim to create experiences that resonate deeply with others, to inspire them to embrace their own unique journeys. This is just the beginning of my story, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!
