Negro Spirituals

Negro spirituals were a significant part of American history and the culture of African Americans. They were created by enslaves Africans and had themes of sorrow hope and liberation. The songs helped slaves express their faith and desire for freedom. The spiritual called “Let My People Go” by Paul Robeson talked about the biblical story on Moses when he was freeing the slaves and told the Egypt Pharoh to “let his people go”. This song is about aching for freedom and correlating themselves too the Egyptian slaves. This song sound very somber and gloomy but it holds a powerful message on freedom and liberation.  His deep voice really adds extra emotion and feeling behind the song. Some key elements were the emotional depth and how Robeson’s voice added emotional weight to the song, showing the pain and hope for seeking freedom.
