Negro spirituals came about after folk music during the save trade when slaves were starting to be transported all over the world to enslavement. Negro spirituals were prominent around the time of the beginning of slavery to the late 1800s.These negro spirituals were songs of the soul, songs that expressed the emotions and torment of enslaved people. Negro spirituals were used express religion and they were used as code songs to send messages between slaves that only slaves would get and understand. Negro spirituals were later written as sheet music and composed by whites, the only people at the time that could officially write and compose music and make money off of it. Negro spirituals would later influence music genres like the jubilee quartets, gospel, and blues.
