Negro Spirituals is a genre of songs originating in the United States that were created by African Americans. These songs were a mixture of christianity and slavery hardships. Negro spirituals are still booming in today’s century even though they were used as a way to praise God. The first major collection of Negro Spirituals was created in 1867. This collection featured songs from W.E.B Dubois. Negro Spirituals could’ve also been used to serve as socio-political protests used against White Americans. Slaves were forbidden to speak their native languages, so in able to express their religious views, they came together with limited vocabulary to translate what they did know in terms of the biblical terms. This started the creation of Negro Spirituals.
