Music from the 40s-90s

The artwork I created to represent the genres over the years is a timeline. I chose a timeline because when we received this project I thought a timeline would be visually helpful, but also to see where each genre fell in relation to the others. The first picture drawn is representing R&B which was created in the 1940s and became popular in the 1950s. I chose to draw a guitar, piano, and microphone to visually depict this genre because pianos and guitars are important instruments in this genre, and the vocal accompaniment is also a key element. The second picture drawn is representing Soul which was created in the 1960s. I chose to draw a fist colored in red, black, and green because soul music was the music of the black power movement and the fist along with the colors chosen were regular symbols of that movement. The third picture drawn is representing Funk which was created in the 1970s. I chose to draw a brown person with an afro and a peace sign because Funk music had a grooving element which was shown through the expression of the individuals who listened to the music. These fans typically wore afros and believed in peace over war. The fourth picture drawn represents Disco which was created in the 1980s. I chose to draw a disco ball because they were particularly found in disco clubs. The last picture drawn represents Techno which was created in the 1990s. I chose to draw a turntable because Techno and House music are mixes created by DJs using turntables. Although I am not very artistic I enjoyed this project because it allowed me to tap into the artistic side of myself that I don’t get to tap into too often.
