In “Lift Every Voice: Marian Anderson, Florence B. Price And The Sound Of Black Sisterhood” the author addressed how women as a whole but black woman especially have been overlooked in the music industry. In the text the author states “Marian Anderson’s story reveals a longstanding legacy of black women amplifying black women’s perspectives through the politics of concert performance,’ which i totally agree with. As a result of Anderson, the possibility for black women’s music to become international when most people thought it was impossible. She broke down barriers for African American women performers such as Florence B. Price, that way they can follow into her foot steps. I definitely enjoyed reading this article. Before reading this I had never even heard of a Marian Anderson or Florence price but now that I have I’m glad. This article proved to me something I had already known but nowadays aren’t believed my many, that women especially black women are strong and were fighters. We never give up. Up to now black women are still overlooked not only in music but in their everyday life and when we try to stand up we’re labeled as “the angry black women” or excuse my language a “bitch,” which to me is ridiculous. Some of the strongest people I know are black women! I also found this article to be very informative. One thing that stuck with me was when the author explained how price’s name was listed in totality in order to reveal her identity as a female while the men’s name weren’t and then she was listed last at that. I found this to be shocking. Why is it anyone’s business what gender the performer is? Why not just wait and see like everyone else. I was just really appalled while reading that. Overall I enjoyed the article and I would definitely recommend it to other to show them that yes you can do anything you put your mind to.
