Let' Talk About Techno

What is Techno?

Techno music was developed in Detroit, Michigan in the 1980s. It was primarily played in underground clubs. The genre combined house music, native to Chicago, electronic jazz, and funk to create a new sound. Techno music, unlike earlier genres, was created by sound engineers using computers. As such, the techno genre paved the way for DJs to gain widespread fame. Nowadays, the most well known techno artists are Caucasian (e.g. David Guetta). However, techno was originally developed by three Black men know as the Belleville Three. Read more below.

"We perceived the music differently than you would if you encountered it in dance clubs. We'd sit back with the lights off and listen to records by Bootsy and Yellow Magic Orchestra. We never took it as just entertainment, we took it as a serious philosophy,"

The Belleville Three
The Belleville Three was a group of three Black men credited with the invention of techno music. Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins became friends at the local Belleville high school: a town that was still filled with racial tension at the time. As three of the few Black people at their school, they grew close, and spent their time listening to a mix of funk and electronic music. The three surfaced on Detroit's club circuit under the name Deep Space Soundworks. Writing and producing music, the Belleville Three continued to make a name for techno worldwide.
