“If you don’t like me, if you like me; both are equally cool. I send love and positive energy to all those people in their lives. I hope they find where they’re meant to be.”
Willow Smith is an evolving artist that is contributing to the alternative music scene. It is significant that she, as a black artist, is becoming an important figure in alternative music.
Background
The artist WILLOW was born the daughter of two big stars: Will Smith and Jada Pickett-Smith. As a result, she began both her music and acting career early in life; her first movie role was in 2007 alongside her father in “I am Legend” which was followed by her musical debut “Whip My Hair” in 2010.
Her original first album, titled “Knees and Elbows” was never released after being postponed and rescheduled. WILLOW went on to become a duo with DJ Fabrega by the name of “Melodic Chaotic”. This duo didn’t go far, as it was highly criticized for it’s mature tone and how the audience didn’t feel that WILLOW was being true to herself. This battle with musical identity is what WILLOW says helped her come to the sound she now has and is thriving under.
The music WILLOW is now known to produce bounces from R&B and alternative, with a unique quality that her audience says only she can produce.
WILLOW is a host of the Red Table Talk, a talk show that includes both her mother and grandmother. This show has led to her receiving an Emmy nomination and also contributes to the intimate nature of her relationships with her audience. Red Table Talk is an open discussion talk show, where WILLOW has come out as bisexual and discussed many personal aspects of her life. Her role as host and speaker gives a window into her life that her audience uses to connect with the artist, making her music a more personal experience for them.
