Shout Four!-An Overview of the Capital City Four and the Jubilee Four!!

Background of Jubilee Quartets

The Jubilee Quartet was a more polished, sophisticated version of the Negro Spiritual and were now arranged,  usually sang in concert halls. They started as a way for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to fundraise for their financial hardships because of their lack of public funding. After the Fisk Jubilee Singers, many groups began to emulate them and the Capital City Four and the Jubilee Four. The quartets consisted of male and female a capella ensemble of four to six voices that perform formal arrangements in close four-part harmony, with rhythmic style of singing.

 

Capital City Four

There is not much information on the Capital City Four but the members of this quartet were Charles Brinson(gospel baritone vocalist), Fred Spinger(gospel autotone vocalist), Isaiah Pelzer(gospel tenor vocalist), William Bell. They were a part of the Barbershop Harmony Society between 1939 and 1941 they earned two medals in the International Quartet Contests, rising as high as 2nd.

Conclusion

In conclusion, learning about this group was very challenging because they were not an official group. There are no pictures of them and they actually were a barbershop quartet first.
