Four sounds

Jubilee Quartet

Jubilee Quartet’s originated in the mid 1800s and derived from negro spirituals. The name jubilee quartet came from the Fisk Jubilee singers from Fisk University from 1909-1916. The songs were often religious singing. It is a quartet because there are four harmonies sung and there can be up to six people in the group. The civil war was ending around the time that Jubilee Quartet’s were becoming popular, but black people still were not completely free so the songs being sung describes the hardships felt.

Some of the most popular jubilee quartet’s were The Fisk Jubilee singers, the Norfolk Jubilee Quartet, and the Golden Gate Quartet.

Jubilee Quartets came to eventually influence gospel music with its instruments, emotions, and voices.
