It’s Going Down- Bebop to Summer of Soul Poem

It's Going Down

In the 1940s everyone was doing Bebop around town

If only they knew what was about to go down

Miles Davis blowing his trumpet and Dizzy on the piano making sounds

If only they knew what was about to go down

In the 50s Sam Cooke and little Richard n ‘em were singing the rhythm and blues making their glorious rounds

If only they knew what was about to go down

A few years later people would be rioting through the town

Oh boy, it was going down

The 60s were a time when we had to fight for our rights

They had killed MLK and they killed Malcom X and black music was used to celebrate our culture and how far we had come

The Harlem cultural festival showcased everyone from Motown to downtown

Oh boy, it was going down

“Say it Loud: I’m Black and I’m Proud” was a staple written by James Brown

Oh boy it was going down

So much has changed in those 20 years

But the fight is not over yet

It is still going down
