It's Electric!

This musical genre first originated in Detroit, Michigan in the 1980s. Techno is a combination of funk and jazz music to form an electric genre that is popular for dancing on the dance floor. Techno has several characteristics, but the first characteristics is synthesizers, an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals in to sound; drum machines, an electronic musical instrument to create percussion in the music; and lastly, sequencers, a device that records, edits and plays music back and forth.

The important artists within this genre are Jeff Mills, Green Velvet, Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saunderson. Many African-American’s express themselves through Techno in particular members of the LGBTQ+ community. Techno’s roots run deep within members of the LGBTQ+ community. When the genre became mainstream, many members of the LGBTQ+ community were restricted from attending the areas and safe spaces they created for their own expression to be themselves without judgement and hatred. But, it was shortly stolen by White people, who were also the reason individuals within queer communities weren’t allowed to enter clubs they once created as a safe place.
